History
Founded in 2006 by co-Directors Christina Maluenda Marchiel and Heather Lubeck, Mission Kids began as a small, licensed, in-home preschool program. Our school has gone through several periods of change and growth due to ever-increasing demand for affordable high quality childcare in San Francisco. First, we merged with an existing co-operative preschool at 1050 South Van Ness, which began our commitment to parent participation in the early childhood space. Next, after years of successful partnership with San Francisco’s Department of Early Childhood, Mission Kids launched a capital campaign to buy a piece of property and build a custom space for our program that would allow for even more expansion. Now serving over 80 children each year, Mission Kids students are primarily low-income children of color in the Mission District, approximately 25% of whom are from monolingual Spanish speaking families.
Mission and Vision

Our mission is to support multicultural, income-diverse families in San Francisco through inclusive, bilingual, play-based early education.
Our vision is to be a community beacon for early childhood care and education.

Quotes from happy parents:
“Me encanta MK me siento muy feliz de que mi hijo este en esta escuela me siento parte de una gran familia”
“The community that I have gotten to know has been invaluable. And our child has grown leaps and bounds in amazing ways and we have grown and learned with her. We will carry that with us hopefully for many many more years.”

Facilities
Mission Kids purchased a plot of land at 969 Treat Avenue near to its original location and built a facility from the ground up for our school. FY 2223 marked our 2nd full school year in the new space and we continued to implement improvements and adjustments, including adding a beautiful mosaic to one of our front entryway walls done by Dana Albany, the same artist who installed the butterfly mosaic in our old space. The building is ADA accessible, has solar panels and is a fantastic early childhood space!
Field Trips and Other Enrichments
One of the unique things about Mission Kids is our dedication to showing our students the sights of the vibrant City in which we all live. In school year 22-23, we went on field trips to the locations listed below. These trips are in addition to our near-daily outings to local playgrounds including Parque Niños Unidos, Garfield Playground, Mission Rec Center, Jose Coronado Playground, Mission Playground, Precita Park, Snake Park (24th and York Mini Park).

Community Benefits
In order to foster further community within our larger school, in school year 22-23 Mission Kids started a new monthly tradition of holding “Jueves de cafe” on the last Thursday of the month. Coffee and treats are provided for grownups and they are encouraged to stay and socialize after drop-off. In addition, we began providing simultaneous interpretation at every community meeting so that our caregiver training is accessible for all of our families.
Conclusion
School year 22-23 marked Mission Kids’ fourteenth year of providing high quality early childhood care to low income families in San Francisco.
